Deglaze and stain ceramic tile?

I have white ceramic tile in my kitchen. Hate it, hate it, hate it. Before I spend the bucks to re-tile -- can I remove the shiny glaze on the tile and apply some kind of stain to change the color? I'm thinking some sort of de-etching process? Any thoughts or experience with a project like this?

Replace the old tile, you'll be glad you did.

There is some re-finishing of glazed tiles but its expensive and not really worth it at all. Just replace much cheaper and better.
