Marble tiles over brick chimney

Hello,

I have a brick chimney I want to tile with marble. I have no clue on where to start. Can this be done without removing the bricks? The bricks are leveled, but should I use a leveling compound in the brick joints or extra mortar? I helped a friend put tiles in his shower several years ago and the tiles would not adhere to the cement board very well. They would shift and slide off. What's the best method to keep this from happening?

Thanks in advance for all the help.

I presume this is an inside fireplace wall?

Skim coat the brick with modified thinset to get even, then set the stone, if the brick is in good shape, just flat trowel the brick and joints smooth and then go over it with the notched side of the trowel, use a 3/8" trowel, if this doesn't give you 100% coverage, move up to a 1/2" trowel.

Start at the bottom and use spacers to hold them in place.
