I have ceramic tile on my bottom floor of the house. Can I somehow put softer tile over the ceramic tile instead of breaking it up which will take forever

Hi Vance,

Being a ceramic tile setter, I find it highly offensive that you would cover up a perfectly good floor with an inferior product. (Just joking.)

Yes, you can. You must locate an "underlayment" powder that will adhere to the ceramic. The powder is mixed with water and skimmed onto the floor with a flat trowel. Keep it as smooth as you can, but you can sand it if you goof a little.

The underlayment will fill the grout joints and bring them up to the level of the tile surface, creating a level floor on which to lay -- I can't bear to say it -- oh well, vinyl tile or even (God, help us) the sheet goods.

I would go to a flooring supplier to buy the underlayment powder. The folks at Home Depot may not know what you're talking about. (If you can find any folks at Home Depot, that is.)

Lots of luck,
