Travertine over clay tiles

I have a outdoor patio that has clay tiles (saltillo). They are getting old. Can I lay Travertine tiles over the saltillo or do I have to take up all of the clay tiles. I have plenty room high. I am just trying to get out of taking the tiles out. Too much work.

You probably could, if all the sealers have been stripped from the tile, I would remove them if this were my job.

How perfect does the thinset under the backer board have to be?

This was my first time mixing the mortar, and I think it was too wet (thick pancake batter). The ridges started to melt down while I was putting the hardie backer down. After all was said and done, I found a small spot where there was a hair of flex in the board so I drove a couple of more screws in and it feels solid now. I have the plumber comming in to rough in everything tomorrow, and don't have the time to rip everything up and start again :wall: . Is there any chance that this floor won't fail?

What is the easiest process to get up this mess? Right now I'm using a chisel to get all the cement off the floor. Any other ways I may be missing? I'm going to put down a vinyl floor, and I know the subfloor must be as smooth as possible. YIKES....this is going to take a while.
