Remove mortar from durock

Remove mortar from durock
I am replacing the ceramic tile in my kitchen. I had already laid durock when laying the previous tile. I have already removed the old tile, but need a way to remove the remaining mortar from the durock. I would think I would need the durock smooth to lay the new tile???
Thanks

dried and set thinset is tough to get smoothed down. While you don't need a "smooth" surface... you do need to get rid of the high spots...
With CBU at only a few dollars a sheet, you might consider just removing/replacing the old.....
