laying slate

We just put in a new propane fireplace, direct vent. We want to put slate down on the floor in front of it and around the sides, between the insert and our wood mantel. We were looking at butting the slate tiles right next to each other, as then we would not be using any grout. Is it OK to do this? I was going to put the slate down using a thin set mortar.

If you like that look go for it, it looks unfinished to me without any grout, just my opinion. No matter how tight you think they are butted there will be room for some dirt to get into the floor tile at least.
