Matching tile height to wood floor height...

Hello all...

I'm needing to install some ceramic tile into my entryway & hallway. The ceramic tile will butt against my new hardwood floor. I'd like to have height of the tile flooring and the hardwood to be level.

With 1/4" of hardibacker, and 1/4" for the tile, that would only leave 1/4" for the thinset between the hardibacker and the subfloor and between the tile and the hardibacker. That doesn't seem like it will be enough.

Any idea how to accomplish this? I've seen this done at a friends house, but I have no information on how it was done (neither does he).

Thanks in advance for your thoughts, suggestions and (possible) chuckles

Generally, from my experience anyway, with 1/4" hardi and tile you will end up a little short of the 3/4" wood. So, I imagine you will have to build up the thinset under the tile to achieve the height you want. I always bevel the edge of the wood about an 1/8" and then the tile lines up with that bevel. So, the tile is just a little lower than the wood.
Good Luck
