Tile over old kitchen counter?

Any recommendations/suggestions/comments on tiling right over our old formica kitchen counter? It's edged with stained wood.

You can if the formica is down tight. If any exposed seams allow water penetration to the pressboard under the formica veneer then you will have to rip it out. Set the tile with a modified thinset after you thoroughly clean the formica and rough it up with rough sand paper to help the bond. Any grease, dirt or soap scum left behind wont allow the thinset to bond properly.

Thanks for the reply, Tileguybob. Can I also use the same procedure for the wood edge, the surface that is perpendicular to the countertop?

Is the wood edge staying or going? Is it adhered to the front of the formica with glue or nailed/screwed?
