how-to create mortar bed for tub?

hello,

i'm in the process of framing a new bathroom, and installing a 3-piece acrylic tub and shower unit. the tub instructions say to create a mortar bed with quickrete for the tub to sit on.

what else does the process involve? do i just frame out a box the width and length of the tub? how much mortar do i put in? do i need to do anything to strengthen the subfloor?

They probably mean to just spread some mortar on the floor wet and set the tub in it for support.

spacers- wall tile?

We want to have a space between our wall tiles in a bathroom we are remodeling The tile will be half way up the side walls and on shower walls. Should we use spacers or is there a better way to make sure the gaps are uniform?

The home I just moved into has a one piece prefab shower/bath in the bathroom and porcelain tiles around it. Along the seam between the tiles and the shower unit, the grout has cracked. :( As the grout lines around the rest of the tile are fine and the tiles are securely fastened to the wall, can I just clean the cracked grout out and caulk that one edge with silicone or do I need to replace the grout? Thanks for any help, Dan
