What's the appropriate substrate for...
...tiling the top cap of a half height seperator wall that previously had a wood top. Its 2x4 and drywall construction, latex painted, 9" wide. Presently there's two 2x4's exposed with a 3" gap between. Wife has started adding to the honey do list while I'm tiling the floor and the new idea rather than refit the wood top we tile it. So - What's the appropriate substrate for that? Can I use drywall and thinset tile over? Or Concrete board/hardi backer? Or a ply top then one of the above? Thanks...

If the top of the wall will have anything like a glass partition set on it I would go with a 1/2" ply and a 1/4" cement board then either tile or a marble sill
