Tile over Tile

Can I use an epoxy glue to secure tile over existing tile on a riser in a vertical application?

Background: In removing some old tile that was on the floor, I inadvertantly chipped off some of the tile that was on the riser step leading out of the shower floor that is actually below the level of the bathroom floor. I now need to cover that up with some of the floor tile that I will lay vertically. Any advice?

Sure, that will work fine. You don't even need to used epoxy, thinset mortar would do.

Kitchen floor help, Vinyl to Ceramic...

I now have vinyl tiles in my kitchen and it looks like they are stuck on top of 3/8" plywood, which I think may be on top of an old tongue and groove 3/4" Oak floor. My subfloor is held up by 2x8"s 16" on center and they have 2 pieces of wood in the middle of the floor like X's for extra support I guess. What do I need to put down in order to properly support the tiles and what are my limitations if any on tile size or material I can use? I know I need to put down Hardibacker to adhere the tiles to but what thickness plywood do i need underneath or can I just put the hardibacker over the old oak floor if it's there when i rip up the existing plywood? I think I have oak floors under the kitchen b/c I can see the flat nails used to put down the Oak tongue and groove sticking out of the celing in the basement. Also, my living room has oak floors and they look like they run right under the plywood of the kitchen where the 2 rooms meet.Read More

Ceramic floor tile over glued laminate

I'm buying a 6 yr old home that has glued laminate flooring in the kitchen. These are individual strips about 2 1/2 inches wide. One small area has been removed and there is a black smooth underlayment visible. This floor is in perfect condition, no buckled areas. I'm assuming this was the method for installing laminate 6 years ago. I want to put down 16" ceramic tile. Do I need to remove the laminate? If so, what type of tool do I use? Obviously it would be much easier if I did not have to remove the floor but I want to be sure that the ceramic tile will "last a lifetime". Thanks EFRead More
