Concrete Tile Backing

I am pulling upa tile floor that appears to be laid on a bed of concrete. Assuming I get the tile up with minimal damage to the concrete bed, can I just tile over this bed instead of putting down backerboard? Will the mortar fill in any little chips or dings or is there some sort of smothing compound that I should use?

Thinset will fill any chips if they are not too deep. If you crack it though, you're in big trouble.

You cannot use backerboard over concrete.

I was thinking of being able to put the tile down without chipping away all the concrete and putting down backerboard in it's place. Sounds like if I am careful, there shouldn't be a problem.
