How do I waterproof this area in my shower???

Hi,
I'm redoing my shower, and I put a cutout in the shower wall to form a niche or tray for shampoo, soap, etc. It's about 1' tall by 10" wide and 4" deep. Currently, it's built in plywood, but if I screw backerboard onto it, how do I waterproof it? Tar paper??

Thanks,
Johnathan

You can skip the plywood and fashion it out of cbu. Tape and thinset the seams and then give the surface of the niche and the walls about 8" surrounding a coating of a trowel on waterproofer such as Redgard.

Got felt behind the backerboard walls?
