Tiling fireplace surround

Backgound: I'm using 12x12 slate tiles for my fireplace surround.

I need some advice on tiling the vertical legs of my surround. The vertical legs are 27" x 12". Should I use 2 full tiles and a cut 3" tile at the bottom of the legs, or should I cut three 9" tiles? I'm not sure what the standard practice is. Above the vertical legs, I have 5 full tiles going across horizontally, if this is any help.

Thanks for any help.

You can put the 3" piece at the bottom. Unless you start playing around with mosaics, you don't have any other option.
