Talking rebuilding tabletop (Ceramic Tile on Table)

I have a small kitchen table 27” x 48” that used to be a part of a kitchen nook. When I bought it I finished it with a urethane coating that’s used on bars, but with time and some beating finish ware off and now my son! makes me feel guilty for how it looks. He wanted to refinish it, but I suggested tiling the top with pieces of tile I have left from various projects. Tabletop is pine & ¾” with slight bevel. How can I make it happen
Without making that table too heavy for it’s legs? Less going and purchasing another table. My wife suggests a kitchen island instead

Hi Newbie. I did something similar, maybe what I have to say will help. First I sanded, with a grinder, all of the old finish off, and in the process removed enough wood to even out the entire surface of my tables (3 coffee, 2 end). I used something like 60 or 80 sandpaper and was left with a very rough finish. Next I replace my old metal legs (lightweight and cheap) with 2"x2" oak table legs, I had to butcher the underneath side of the table to get them in there, and believe it or not they are held in place with only wood glue. The coffe table weights about 90 lbs, I can stand on it and "move around" so it would take the plywood the table is made out of to split apart before it comes crashing down.

Next I installed slate one piece at a time, glueing it down with tubes of Liquid nails. They havent come up yet! It's been over 2 years, here are links to pictures...

thanks

Thanks a lot! Looks very good. My problem is the fact that my table is not plywood but a fragile pine and I feel not safe gluing tile on top of it. May be I should abandon the whole thing and go with my wife's $$$$ option.
Thanks
