Tile over Vinyl

If you nail down plywood into the studs over the vinyl would the tile still fail? My husband thought that might work. I'm thinking that it would still be best to remove vinyl altogether. What say you?

THat would remove the vinyl issue, but you would still need a fiber-cement backerboard on top of the ply.

No it wouldn't, get rid of the vinyl and any 1/4" underlayment that might also be there, then see what you have for a subfloor and go from there.

Ditto, the vinyl has to go. I used to think you could do what your husband is proposing and learned the hard way, many years ago.
