Ceramic or slate tile over painted concrete

I want to install Ceramic or slate tile over painted concrete in my basement. Do I need to strip or etch the floor because of the paint in order to allow a thin set mortar to adhere properly?

Yes you need to mechanically remove the paint from the slab. Chemical stripers that get absorbed into the slab can prevent the thinset from bonding to the slab.

They have mechanic floor scrapers which you can rent from Home Depot type stores. Some have scrapers, some have an abrasive pad. It will not be fun.....
