Mortar on old Mortar
Hi There,
The mortar bed is from the mid 60s and was stable (no cracks in the tiles prior to removal). The tiles were laid on a mortar bed. In taking the tiles out, in some places there are a few divets from where the mortar came off with the tiles. Should we use something to fill in the divets, or can we lay the tiles directly on top with Thinset, which would also fill the divets.
This is a bathroom floor.

If the floor is in good shape as you described then use thinset to fill the holes and set the tile at the same time.
