What to do with pointy joists before laying down 3/4" plywood?

Hello & Help!
This house is 90 some years old.

Tore up old floor that was layer with sheet vinyl, vinyl squares, then ceramic tile embedded in concrete & then different concrete between joists.

After taking all this up, I saw that the joists were not flat, but have points on them. Wonder what to do to get these joists ready to lay down plywood, then Hardibacker & then I plan to tile the floor with slate.

Please, any recommendations.

Wish I could post a photo.

You can post photos if you use photo bucket. I had a customer with a similar issue and he popped a chalk line along the joists and cut the crown off the joists to flatten them. I'm not sure how that would effect their strength, which will need to be considerable for what you're doing.

I've seen what you are talking about on some older homes.

Sister the joists with new ones. That will give you a falt nailing surface and beef up your floor for a stone installation.

Daniel - I've heard that "sister" term before but don't really know what it means. Does that mean to just nail another piece of lumber onto the side of the existing one, in effect doubling each of them? That's what the term sounds like to me.

Pointy Joists

Thank you for the replies. Some more questions based on your replies.

The joists are 2 X 6's. Given this size, would cutting some off the top leave them stable enough?

Sister the joists - Nailed next to the joists on both sides are pieces of wood 3/4" X 2" and on top of those nailed pieces sit the floor boards. Would screwing 2 X 4's adjacent to the 2 X 6's work given this configuration?
