caulk or mortar cement board corners?

I have almost finished putting up my hardiboard, but I have some gaps in the corners where the wall is not even. Do I caulk these areas or put mortar before I apply my ceramic tile. Also, what about where the facuet and shower head come through the hardiboard, do you caulk or mortar it?

We've just addressed the seams and corners. I pack the area around the fixture pipes with thinset and tape them as well. Another thing you may want to consider is a waterproofing membrane. Red Gard is the one I use and it is very good insurance. If you want to know more about it, holler.

I cut the poly vapor barrier tight around the fixtures and silicone it to the fixtures. I cut the tile tight around the fixtures and silicone it as well. Just a different point of view.

Hey johnny, good to see you back. Busy these days are we? That's a good idea that I'd never considered. I'll give it a try next time.
