Ceramic Tile over resanded, sealed strip hardwood flooring?
We tried to refinish prefinished strip oak hardwood flooring and we're just not happy with it at all. Rather than spend more money and effort on it, we may install ceramic tiling instead since we have two big dogs. We already put down wood sealer on the sanded hardwood. Can we put ceramic tiling directly on that?
Thanks!

Probably not. Wood contracts and expands too much. Your tile and grout would crack in no time.
Hang in there and one of our more knowledgable guys will ask you more questions.

No way! If you want a permanent floor such as ceramic you'll have to removed the hardwood first. Once you do that, it is likely you'll need to install a plywood underlayment and then a tile backer board or a tile isolation membrane. Finally the fun part of installing the tiles.
We can guide you thru the process if you'll start with basic info such as the size, spacing, and span of the joists. Note their condition and species if marked. The type and thickness of the subfloor, which is under your hardwood. It's also helpfully if I knew the age of the house and where it's located.

You can remove the wood strip flooring, so there will be no worry about it buckling under the tiles later.
You can overlay the wood flooring strips with plywood, to dimensionally stablize the subfloor. Then lay CBU panels, or a uncoupling membrane like Shcluter Ditra.
The on thing most DIY'ers don't realize, is the substrate has to meet deflection ratings, or the tile & grout will bust loose. Movement, is tiles killer.
