Cement backer board

I have a 1/4" x 8' round metal outdoor table that I was wanting to apply mosaic tile to. My plan would be to secure cement backer board to the metal table w/thinset and screws. Then use thinset over the backer board along with the tiles. Does this sound viable?

Also, what would you guys suggest using to cut the backer board to fit the round table?

It sounds viable, but I'm not all that sure it's necessary. I've never tried to put tile on metal so I don't know how it would behave without the backer board. As to cutting something like that, I like to use my 4 1/2 inch angle grinder with a dry cut tile blade. Goes through concrete board like butter and will give you a clean cut. Do it outside though, it's dusty.
