Ceramic over linoleum tiles

I wish to install a ceramic floor in my basement. It is now made of linoleum tiles glued directly on the painted concrete slab.
Can I install the ceramic tile directly over the linoleum tile or do I have to scrape off the lenoleum tile first in order to have a durable result?
Thanks,
Jacques

You need to remove both the vinyl and the paint. How old is the paint and the vinyl? You can't use chemicals to prep the slab so if either tests as lead or asbestos, respectively, you've got your hands full. Otherwise, it's just laborious and dusty.
