Want to be sure of process before I begin...

I am installing a slate tile kitchen countertop. It has a 3/4 ply base. I will be installing a 1/4 in. backer. I have a couple of questions:

1. What type of thinset should be used for backerboard?

2. What type of thinset for the tiles themselves?

3. For slate, shouldn't I apply a pre-grout sealer? If so, again what type?

4. What type of grout should I use?

5. What type of grout should I use?

6. What type of sealer should I use?

And Finally,

7. What type of thinset should be used on the backsplash tiles installed directly over drywall?

I know its a lot of questions, but I just want to be sure of what I am doing.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

1. What type of thinset should be used for backerboard?
Versabond

2. What type of thinset for the tiles themselves?
Same as above

3. For slate, shouldn't I apply a pre-grout sealer? If so, again what type?
Apply the pre-grout sealer after you install the tile. HD or Lowes has it and it's called "Pre Grout Sealer"

4. What type of grout should I use?
Depends on grout spacing, but anything 1/8 or bigger, use a sanded grout that comes in a bag (Polyblend)

6. What type of sealer should I use?
A decent PENETRATING sealer. When I say decent, not the $9.99 stuff, but the green bottle that is about 3x the money.

7. What type of thinset should be used on the backsplash tiles installed directly over drywall?
Versabond.

Just do not use anything that comes in a bucket. You can use unmodified for any of these steps, but I always prefer a good modified thinset like Versabond.
