Can I tile over epoxy coated floor?

I applied an epoxy coating (Rust Oleum or Quikrete) to our basement concrete floor 2 years ago. I am now finishing our basement and want to lay ceramic tile to the floor. Can I lay tile directly over the epoxy coating? I am concerned the mastic might not stick to the epoxy. I have read you can grind the surface, but that sounds like a major job.

Has anyone tried this? If I can't put the tile directly on the epoxy, what would you suggest? Thank you

The coating has to be removed.

A floor scarifier will take it up in no time...well...a few hours.

I am concerned the mastic might not stick to the epoxy.
I am also very concerned that you mentioned "mastic". Mastic has no business being used on a floor. The only thing I might use mastic for is a backsplash. Use a good modified thinset.

Thanks for the response. How do I remove the coating? Can I rough up the surface to help the thinset adhere? Is it possible to use a membrane for a floating floor?

I told you how to remove it.

Rent a floor scarifier. HD & Lowes rent them.

You will not be able to get all this epoxy up with some sand paper.

Also, tile + floating do not mix well together at all.

There have membrains for cement, like Schluter Ditra, but the concrete needs to be free of paint and it gets thinsetted to the concrete.
