Best tile for shower?

I will be replacing my ceramic tile in my shower with natural stone. Initially, I like the look and feel of slate or travertine, although I'm open to suggestions. I don't care for the polished glass smooth look of granite or marble.
Between those two (slate, travertine), which would be best in terms of durability and maintenence?
Also, is it practical to pull out the fiberglass bottom and replace that entirely with the natural stone tiles..--i.e. extending the tile all the way down to the floor? Or would that create an issue with water eventually getting under the tile to the wood floor below?

Take a look at this link, to understand how a shower is waterproofed. Just tile and grout doesnt do it.

Slate usually isnt a good choice for showers. What kinda travertine, tumbled, honed, polished? Really, your best bet would be to find a porcelain that looks like slate or travertine. You'll have less problems and maintenance issues.

Travertine would be a much better choice than slate, easier to clean and maintain and it wont shed like slate layers can often do.
