river rock removal

I have a patio which the floor is concrete underneath and chattahoochee river rock on top.I want to remove the rock and replace with tile.Is there any product out there that will loosen the river rock so I would be able to use a scrapper to lift it off easier.Someone said to use a jackhammer but I thought their might be an easier solution

It's going to depend on what was used to adhere the rock to the concrete floor. Any idea? There is no special "formula" item that will loosen what is holding it. It will take brute strength and hard hits to get it loose if held down with a good cement based adhesive. Let us know. You may want to post a couple of pix on a site such as photobucket.com and copy/paste the HTML code to your reply post so we can see what you see.

Its a epoxy that they use.Im thinking now it might be easier to put backingboard down and bolt it into the concrete

Is it a smooth surface to begin with. I can't picture it. Are the stones embedded in the epoxy?
