We recently bought a new house that has a very worn vinyl floor. We would like to replace it with ceramic tile but are unsure of how to remove the existing floor.

Depending on the vinyl, it might be glued on the edges or throughout the floor. I just remove the 1/4 round from the bottom of the walls and pull the vinyl up. After that scrape as much old glue off as you can before trying to tile. With a good subfloor, No other floor prep should be need to start installing your tile. I will use Versabond Thinset and back butter my tile during the installation and you will not have any problems.

Only addition I might add to this would be to check your subfloor carefully for any "give" areas, and assure yourself that the subfloor is properly attached to its base.
