Question

HELLO ALL! I'm giving a facelift to a kitchen that has a formica countertop which is in sound shape, just tired looking. I've found tile to match and complement the existing backsplash. Would love to tile right over the existing countertop before I put in a new sink.

Does anyone have reccomendations on how to get good adhesion? Thanks to all.

I wouldn't recomend going over the formica, but if you are determined to do it anyway you can probably use a laminators trick of heavily sanding the surface first to give the adhesive something to grip. After that, my suggestion is to use an epoxy based adhesive like the type used to install marble tile. Those usually adhere anything known to man. Good luck!

Hi Gail,
I have tiled over several formica counter-tops and {sorry Mario} don't have a big problem with it. My recommendation would be to use {as Mario has stated} a good quality adhesive. I normally just use Liquid-Nail to butter the tiles and make sure to SEAL the tile properly when completed.
