I am remodeling my bathroom. Presently there are 1/2 slate tiles of varying size laid on the floor. I am installing 4x4 ceramic tiles. What kind of prep do I need to do to the subfloor after I remove the slate tiles? Do I need to remove all the old thinset and do I need to apply cement board?

My husband and i are thinking about remodelling our kitchen with new cabinets, countertop, appliances and a new linoleum floor. Our problem now is the existing ceramic tile and grout floor. We think the tile is set directly onto concrete but we are not sure. The floor maybe the original floor when the house was built some 60 years ago. My questions are how do we go about removing this floor? I know that our stove and refrigerator sit on top of this floor, is it possible that the cabinets do too? How can you tell without destroying existing cabinetry? Especially if we decide not to remodel entirely (maybe just refacing) it all depends on $$$. But we both agree the floor needs to go, what is the best way to do this? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Terri
