tile over linolium

i have linolium in the kitchen and foyer. can i put tile directly over the linolium? should i put down hardiboard over it first? this is my first tile project and i'm not sure what to do.

Its been done but I don't reconnend it. Use the Hardibacker and follow their instructions for putting it down. A ceramic tile floor needs a sturdy base.

I am torn between installing hardibacker and ceramic tile under the toilet, thereby requiring me to replace the johnny ring and extend the bolts, or just tiling up to the toilet, which might be a problem if we ever have to replace the john.

I'M REMODELING MY KITCHEN. MY TILE BACKSPLASH USED TO COME UP APPROX. 18 INCHES ABOVE THE COUNTER. I HAVE REMOVED THE OLD TILE AND NOW THE OLD DRYWALL IS COVERED WITH THE ADHESIVE FROM THE TILE. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS TO REMODEL MY KITCHEN? SHOULD I REPLACE THE WALLBOARD AND START NEW? SAND OR TEAR THE ADHESIVE OFF THE WALLBOARD AND RE-MUD AND THEN TEXTURE AND PAINT? OR LASTLY, JUST TILE OVER THE OLD WALLBOARD AND PUT NEW ADHESIVE ON THE OLD WALL AND RETILE?
