Hardibacker over vinyl

I am tiling a bathroom with 6x6 ceramic tiles. I am using hardibacker as the surface for the tiles. Current floor is a sheet of vinyl. Can I put the hardibacker directly over the vinyl or do I have to rip the vinyl out first prior to installing the hardibacker? Thanks for your help.

Remove the vinyl and any 1/4" underlayment that the vinyl is on. If the vinyl is glued, its easiest to remove the vinyl and underlayment at the same time.
