Vertical Tiling Over Brick

I have a faux fireplace in my living room and am looking to tile over it. The brick has several layers of latex paint on it. Would it be easier/better to screw 3/8 cement board to the brick and tile over that? If that is the case, what is the best way to join the joints in the cement board?

With the brick painted it might be better to add the cement board to aid in adhesion but I can't say for sure. I have stuck tiles using fortified thinset (also called latex modified) and have had no problems getting them to stick to painted drywall so maybe do a test one.

For the seams, you use special mesh tape and coat it with a layer of thinset.
