If burn stains are so difficult to remove or clean off of a marble surface than why other than aesthetics do they use it around a fireplace?

That's it, aesthetics. Are you sure you have natural stone? Could it be "cultured marble"?

Hi Kevin,
If it's cultured marble, the guys who make it can repair it. Check the Yellow Pages under "marble, cultured."
Or tear the stuff out and install some real material there.

How to tell!!
Hi Kevin,
The easiest way to tell if its "cultured" marble or "natural" marble is feel or look on the under side if its bumpy or looks like air bubbles its cultured stone if its smooth and has saw marks in it it natural. If it is cultured stone the guys who make it can fix your burn mark very easily. You can generally find one in the Yellow Pages like John said. Natural marble will burn but, it won't melt too much like cultured stones will another test is heat up a needle red hot(I recommend using pliers to hold the needle) In an inconspicuous area while the needle is hot try to stick it in to the marble if it sinks right in (melts) its probably cultured goods if it does not sink right in its probably natural stone. P.S. this is a great test to see if your turquoise is "real" or "faux". and it works. Good luck and let us know!
