Best transition is zero. Give us more information to go on. Like what the problem is.

Hi Chandler... Laying new tile in the kitchen, after the backerboard underlayment, thinset and tile, Im estimating about a 3/4 difference in height. Previously the vinyl tiles in the kitchen ran almost even to the carpet in the living room. I'm trying to find out the best method to make that transition now, being as though there will be a height difference.

oh yea, the concern is stubbing, or tripping. I was thinking quarter round with a stain that matched the kitchen cabinets...is this ok?

Your solution would probably work better than store bought transition strips. Only problem will be the quarter round sticking out past the wood in thin air. Obviously it won't be sitting on anything firm, so that has to be taken into account. I like the idea, however.
