Do you need cement board under tile?

My home is on blocks and not a cement slab. I know if I tile the floor then I will need to use cement board first but what about the backsplash in the kitchen? I'm wanting to do a tile backsplash on the kitchen and bathroom walls. Do I need cement board under it so it will be more stable in case my house shifts or settles?

No...in a non-wet area (like a backsplash...but not a shower wall) you can tile right over sheetrock/drywall.

CBU gives no strength and will crack and shift just as much as sheetrock.
