Hey Guys, I have solid maple flooring in the bathroom that after much debate the wife and I have decided to replace with tile. That said, I need a little help planning out the project and hence I am here for your wisdom. The current floor is 2x8 joists (16OC) with what appears to be 1x6 plank subfloor. The maple it nailed directly into the 1x6 plank. My thoughs are to remove the maple, install a 1/4" cement backer board and then lay the tile. Will this be adequate subfloor for the tile install? I'm hoping not to have to remove tha plank and install new engineered sub floor, but will if necessary. Pending the plank can stay put, how do I fasten the cement board to the subfloor? We are looking at either 12" porcelin or ceramic tile, nothing fancy here. What type of thinset is best and what type of grout for this application? All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bryan

I'm moving into a new rented place on the weekend and there is no kitchen in the basement like there is in the current place I'm living. My mum and I are sharing a full house, she has the main floor, I have the basement. I have a fridge and a few other kitchen like appliances that I need to be able to use in the basement. The entire floor is carpeted there. So I had an idea of getting some thick plywood and self sticking tiles and making a "kitchen" area in part of the living room. It needs to be able to hold the fridge since I'm not putting it on carpet, it's old and I'd prefer not to kill the motor or burn the house down. I also need to not do any damage to the carpet obviously. Think this will work? If not any ideas on what might? I'm pretty useless at building anything but pretty sure I can stick tiles on a sheet(s) of plywood. :p Thanks!
