Floor Prep questions for renovation

Long time lurker, first time poster. . .

We are renovating our old Sears home and the kitchen is the first place we started. The downstairs (where the kitchen is) is all hardwood, directly over floor joists (no subfloor).

The old floor covering is the kitchen is 1/4" plywood/luan nailed to the hardwood with a VERY old layer of vinyl on top of that. The vinyl appears to be in one piece, it is certainly not tiles.

There are entrances from the kitchen into the dining room, and down a hall, both of which have the hardwood as the floor, so I'm trying to avoid too much build up.

We would like to put down ceramic or similar tile. Here are a few specs, than I have a few questions.

Specs:
Kitchen is roughly 13'x13'
Flooring is 2"x7/8" (last owner claimed hard pine? It's pretty darn hard, need to predrill to nail it)
All cabinets are out
We have access to the underside in the basement
Floor is pretty level and mostly flat (flatness ~1/16" over 48")
I believe the hardwood underneath is in stable condition, as it is the rest of the house
No hardwood creaks or moans, floor seems pretty solid
Planning on using 12"x12" tiles

Questions:
Can I go right over the vinyl with 1/4" cement board and tile on top of that?
If I tear up the vinyl and 1/4" subfloor, keeping in mind my height restrictions, what needs to go back down before the cement board and tile?

I'm sure there have been many posts that address these concerns, but there are so many sub-floor threads out there, I can't seem to find one that pertains specifically to me.

I can post up pictures of the actual situation later tonight if that will help my cause.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forums

What size are your floor joists and how far do they span?

I'm going to let the pros respond now, I think your floor is going to need quite a bit of work to hold tile.
