tiling over tiles

Is there anyway to put ceramic tile over ceramic tile? Our house is on a slab and to remove the existing ceramic is a mess. Could you just put down some type of backer board and tile over that?

I am sure it has been done, but done right, the old tile should be removed. Remember you are adding to the height of the tile by quite a bit which will affect door openings, possibly baseboard heating units, etc. You can rent a pneumatic, electric type tool to allow quick removal of the tile. Yes it is a mess, but you will like the results.

There's certainly some work involved in tearing up the old tiles but I think it would be worth it. As Chandler mentioned, you'd be adding quite a bit of height to the floor if you left the old tiles.
