Room transition maximum height difference?

Any guidelines/rules on the maximum height difference when transitioning rooms? Currently my bathroom is 1.5" higher than the living room. Is this too high (i.e. to cause a trip hazard)?

1 1/2" borders on a good trip factor. I don't like to see much more than 3/4" difference at a maximum. I am guessing adding cbu and tile to the existing bathroom floor, rather than taking it back down to subflooring caused the height problem.
