Sub-Floor / Mortar Help
I am tiling a downstairs bathroom... I will be laying the tile directly on the concrete. Is this a problem? I have done this before in other areas of my basement and have had no issues with cracking, etc.
It has been a couple of years since I last laid the tile in my basement, and I cannot remember if I did anything to prep the surface or what type of mortar I used. Any suggestions?

Should not present a problem. Now, with that said, your concrete must be clean and free of oils and crud, and must be reasonably flat and level. I would check it with a known straight edge of at least 6' in length to see if you have any boogers in the floor that need wither self leveling compound or scraping, like old concrete spills.

The concrete slab must be clean and should be able to absorb water. It should not be sealed, painted etc. You can pour a little water on the slab to make sure it absorbs water. If it does the thinset should bond just fine. What condition is tha slab in? Are there any cracks, if so describe them and attache some pics of possible? Is the slab flat, no low spots or high spots, if not describe what you have?
If you are installing ceramic/porcelain tile, any good quality modified thinset will do the trick. If you are installing natural stone tile, what kind?
