Need to make shower base/pan

I am redoing a shower that has been taken out already down
to the concrete floor. It is not a size for a standard
shower pan, so i need to make the shower base, which will
then be tiled with 4 1/4" tile on the shoer floor and walls.

My compadre Michael Byrne has posted a pretty good article complete with pictures. I don't agree with everything he says, but this will certainly get you started.

I am laying 12 x 12 tile in my masterbath and am trying to figure out the best layout before starting. The orientation of the floor is as you walk in the door the vanity is to your left, straight ahead is a whirlpool tub with a toilet set in line with the center of the tub set back in an alcove, to the right of the door is the shower and between the shower and the toilet alcove is the door to the closet. If I lay the tiles starting with a full tile at the tub and follow the vanity, I can use full tiles all the way to the entry door, perfect fit, no cutting. When I layout around the tub, the tile along the wall in the toilet alcove will be about 4 inches wide. Should I adjust the tiles along the tub so that I dont have such a small strip. I think it will be ok but Im looking for other comments. Can you stain grout?

My husband has layed tile and thinks the grout is too light in color. Can grout be stained? Is there another process that we can use? I would appreciate any help we can get. Thanks a million!!!Read More
