Tile over plywood?

Can I set tile for a kitchen countertop on plywood or do I need to put down plywood, then Wonderboard, then tile? What are the concerns about setting directly on the plywood?

Hi Steve
I believe I would put down some other type of surface like Wonderboard or Durock befoere tiling. The plywood when it gets wet will swell , and could break the bond with the tile. There are a number of reasons why not to lay on plywood but the cost of the proper underlayment is really cheap insurance.

Hi Stevie,

One of the reasons it's not a good idea to tile over plywood is that it can move horizontally (as well as swell). Ray is correct. Install cement backer over the ply.
