I just laid down tile in a 10 by 20 foot room and after mortaring and laying the tiles I tested them by knocking on them, many of them were hollow underneath so I know that I need to replace them with more mortar underneath, but can anyone suggest the best way to pop the tiles up before starting. I tried a screwdriver but I started scratching the tiles and I don't want to do that.

Cool

Hi Donna,
What size tiles? and what size trowel did you use?
generally you need to start at the middle and work your way to the edges. Try wrapping your screwdriver in cloth to avoid marring the tile.

Donna,

Rich wants to know how deep the notches are on the trowel you used. 1/4 inch? 3/8 inch?

He's trying to figure out why you have so many hollow tiles. Maybe you don't need to remove them all.
