surface build up prior to laying

Tried to remove ~1800 SF of tile on a slab - 8 hours later, using power tools, got maybe 80' SF up so I'm considering Plan B, tile over tile.

Questions:

1) Am I asking for trouble with tile over tile? Original 6"x6" tile has been down 30+ years and may have been set in cement, not thin set.

2) There is about 350 SF that was carpeted and will need to be filled. What is best for underlayment? Tile, concrete board or . . . What is the best way to level ?

New tile will be 20"x20".

As always, thanks!

What are you trying to use to remove it?
In order to be able to install a tile that big you would need a dead flat surface.

If there's cracks and there will be you use a membrane like this.

Rented a power chisel - medium sized from a choice of three. Can try again - maybe I had the angle incorrect but I felt that I tried every
way to attack it.
