I would like to replace my tile floor with different tile. If I remove the old tile (it's in good condition not loose or anything) do I need to sand the thinset down to the cement or can I install over the left over thinset. I've also heard about laying tile over tile. Wouldn't that make the surface pretty high or am I missing something? Thanks!

Hi Jessica,

We routinely tile over tile if the increased height can be accommodated, and it usually can. If it's a kitchen, the one concern is usually an under-counter dishwasher. It has to be removable down the road.

If you do remove the old tiles you can tile right over the thin set residue. You'll use more material, but the cost is small compared to having to remove the old stuff.
