Is a damp proof membrane such as 4 mil poly... sufficient as a vapor resistant barrior in a steam shower? If the rock is already up without a damp prrof membrane behind it, is there an outer wall coating that i can use without tearing down the pre-preped walls such as black-jacking (liquid tar) or other?

Cool

Bassmaster,
4mil poly sheeting will be fine except it needs to be between the substrate and the studs. I do not know of anything that will work once the substrate is up. Also you stated that"if the "rock" was already up". If the "rock your speaking of is sheetrock and it is inside the steam shower that is a NO NO you cannot use sheetrock in any wet areas especially in a steam shower. All is not lost though simply put up your waterproof barrier over the sheetrock and then put a backer board that is rated for ceramic tile over that. and you will have a shower that will probably not fall down within a year or so.
Good luck,
