Question How to Get Writing off Granite?

Technically, this question is about countertops and not tile, but I figure this type of thing may be common with granite whether it is tile or a countertop. ;-)

I'm noticing that several of granite countertops in our new house have writing on them (see picture below). The countertop is smooth, so it doesn't appear to be etched out. Any thoughts on how I can clean off this writing?

It's hard to tell from the picture what it is.

Have you tried soap and water ?

Does it smear or rub off at all ? I'm thinking a wax crayon.
Possibly a white type marker ? You could try my favorite.... lighter fluid..... or even GooGone.

Surely these are not finished over the writing. Is there a polished finish? Aside from what Pete suggested, since it is a new house, I'd call the contractor back in to do something about it.

I seem to recall that the stone guys use white out pens to mark the slab for cutting. So what ever solvent will take out that should work. But as always, test in an inconspicuous area.

Often times it's just caulk.
Tried just wiping it off with a damp cloth?
