alternative to leveling compound

In one area I pulled up some old tiles from basement cement floor. I scrapped, vacuumed and then used Henry 555 leveling compound. When dry I simply painted with floor paint.

Since its in an unfinished storage area, no foot traffic really, its held up excellent.

I have a second similar room I like to do this too but the leveling compound is not cheap (40 bucks a bag).

Can this be done with standard concrete that would be smooth like the leveling compound?

Its not as easy to level but you could use something like Quikrete Portland Topping Mix. Add an acrylic bonding agent, follow directions, steel trowel until smooth.
