painting question

I have seen on tv in the past how to create the look of ceramic/marble tiles by painting them on the wall rather than using the real thing and it looked professional and tricked the eye into believing there was really ceramic/marble tiles there-not just paint.

I want to create that look on the wall behind my counter tops in the kitchen. I can't remember how it was done. My walls are already white so that would serve as the grout color-but what do I use to make the pattern and tape off the squares to create 3" X 3" size squares without having the paint run. Is there a special kind of tape or method you are aware of? Then after I tape the area off in the correct pattern and size-how do I apply the paint to create a marble tile look/not a solid painted square?

Thanks for your help!

The technique is called "trompe l'oeil," but it is not a part of tile setting. You might have better luck on the painting forum, or decorating?
